Los residentes del Condado de Union que andan en búsqueda de información sobre los servicios disponibles para los adultos mayores de 60 años les proporcionamos una lista de fechas y lugares para que puedan hablar con personal del Departamento de Servicios Humanos, División de Adultos (Envejecientes) sobre los diferentes programas que hay disponibles.

Las visitas están programadas para el mes de noviembre y personal del Condado de Union estará disponible en las siguientes bibliotecas públicas Elizabeth, Cranford, Clark, Garwood, Mountainside, Summit, Union, y el Rahway Senior Center.

““El próposito es de ayudar a los residentes a obtener información sobre los programas y servicios disponibles a los adultos mayores y aquellos que cuidan de ellos en su comunidad,” dijo la Legisladora Presidente Bette Jane Kowalski. “Este programa ayuda a los adultos mayores, sus familias y a los que cuidan de ellos a tener información actual cerca de casa.”

Organizaciones No-Lucrativas del Condado de Union están Invitadas a un Taller Gratis sobre Desarrollo de Juntas

La Junta de Legisladores del Condado de Union invita a las organizaciones sin-ánimo de lucro dentro del Condado a que asistan a un taller gratis enfocado en el Desarrollo de Juntas Directivas . Los participantes aprenderán formas especificas de fortalecer y hacer crecer sus organizaciones.

El taller se títula “Board Members Are People Too / Miembros Directivos Son Personas También,” y se llevará a cabo el lunes, 28 de octubre de 6:30 p.m. a 9:00 p.m. en el Liberty Hall Wagon Shed, situado en el 1003 Morris Avenue, in Union.

“La Junta de Legisladores se enorgullece en ofrecer esta oportunidad de desarrollo professional a las organizaciones sin fines de lucro del Condado de Union,” comentó la Legisladora Presidente Bette Jane Kowalski. “Es muy importante que estas organizaciones estén equipadas con la destreza necesaria para proporcionar los mejores servicios a los residentes del Condado de Union.”

Este taller es abierto a todas las organizaciones de arte, historia y de servicio, especialmente aquellas que recibieron fondos a través del programa del Condado de Union HEART, Arte Local e Historia. Otras organizaciones también son bienvenidas.

Freeholder Board Announces Grants to Support Children’s Programming in 20 Libraries in Union County

The Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders is pleased to announce the 2019 Union County Library Grant awards for 20 public libraries in Union County. The grants are designed to assist public libraries with funding that enriches and supports children’s programming.

The awards will help cover the cost of STEAM and STEM programs as well as arts enrichment, new books and computer equipment, SAT prep and more.

“This grant program helps local libraries keep their programming up to date and relevant to the needs and aspirations of children in their communities,” said Freeholder Chair Bette Jane Kowalski who originated the grant program in 2016. “The Freeholder Board is proud to support public libraries in their efforts to provide children with resources that cultivate creativity and critical thinking.”

Each of the 20 municipalities with a public library applied for a 2019 Library Grant and received an award, including Berkeley Heights, Clark, Cranford, Elizabeth, Fanwood, Garwood, Hillside, Kenilworth, Linden, Mountainside, New Providence, Plainfield, Rahway, Roselle, Roselle Park, Scotch Plains, Springfield, Summit, Union and Westfield.

Just “ASK” for Information about Senior Services in Union County

Union County residents seeking information about services for adults age 60 and older can come to convenient locations throughout the County and speak in person with experienced staff from the Union County Aging and Disability Resource Connection, a division of the Department of Human Services.

The community visits are scheduled every month through Union County’s ASK (Aging Services Kiosk) program. In November, the ASK program will come to public libraries in Elizabeth, Cranford, Clark, Garwood, Mountainside, Summit, Union, and the Rahway Senior Center.

“Our goal is to help senior residents access the resources they need to stay connected with their communities,” said Freeholder Chair Bette Jane Kowalski. “The ASK program helps seniors, their families, and their caregivers get expert guidance in person, in a comfortable setting close to home.”

Guidance offered through the ASK program includes home delivered meals, respite care, home care, adult day care, and support services for caregivers.

Assistance with completing applications and forms is also provided.

All Union County residents are welcome to attend any ASK event. The dates and locations for November are:

New turf fields at Union County’s Ponderosa Park in Scotch Plains

Union County Freeholder Chair Bette Jane Kowalski, Vice Chairman Alexander Mirabella and Freeholders Rebecca Williams and Andrea Staten joined Union County Deputy County Manager Amy Wagner, Scotch Plains Mayor Al Smith, Township officials and student athletes at the opening of the new turf fields at Union County’s Ponderosa Park in Scotch Plains. Cabalgatas y Paseos Embrujados Anuales en la Reservación de Watchung del 25 al 27 de octubre

La Junta de Legisladores del Condado de Union leda la bienvenida a las familias con hijos a disfrutar de los Paseos Embrujados en el Deserted Village of Feltville en la Reservación de Watchung el 25, 26 y 27 de octubre entre las 6:30 p.m. y las 10:00 p.m.

“Este programa de Cabalgatas y Paseos Embrujados es uno de los muchos eventos que el Departamento de Parques y Recreación del Condado de Union tiene durante este tiempo en la Reservación de Watchung, dijo la Legisladora Presidente Bette Jane Kowalski. “En el espiritu de Halloween, este evento es un verdadero placer para los padres y sus hijos.”

Los paseos están programados cada media hora de 6:30 a 9:00 p.m. el Viernes, 25 de octubre y sábado 26, y de 6:30 a 8:30 p.m. el domingo 27 de octubre. Esta experiencia dura aproximadamente una hora. Adultos y niños de 6 años en adelante son bienvenidos. Se suguiere ponerse ropa abrigada y zapatos cómodos para caminar.

Los boletos se deben comprar con anticipación el el Trailside Nature & Science Center, situado en el 452 New Providence Road en Mountainside. El precio del boleto es de $8 para los residentes del Condado de Union y de $16 para los que viven en otro Condado. Union County Freeholders and Senator Scutari Dedicate Charlotte Defilippo Park in Hillside after Charlotte Defilippo

. Union County Sheriff Peter Corvelli, Freeholder Angela Garretson, State Senator Joe Cryan, Michael DeFilippo (striped pants, Charlotte DeFilippo’s son), former Deputy Surrogate JoAnn Schwab (green jacket), Freeholder Chair Bette Jane Kowalski, and State Senator Nicholas P. Scutari.

The Union County Freeholders and State Senator Nicholas P. Scutari recently joined with legislators as well as municipal officials, friends and family members in dedicating Charlotte DeFilippo Park on Liberty Avenue in Hillside.

“Charlotte was raised here and lived most of her life in Hillside,” said Senator Nicholas P. Scutari, who emceed the event. “From humble roots, she became one of the state’s most influential leaders, and her governmental and civic career spanned six decades at the local and county government levels.”

DeFilippo grew up on Liberty Avenue, not far from the county park now dedicated in her name. She passed away in 2017.

State Senator Joseph Cryan (D-21); Freeholder Chair Bette Jane Kowalski; Freeholder Angela Garretson; Sheriff Peter Corvelli; DeFilippo’s long-time friend JoAnn Schwab (and also retired Union County Deputy Surrogate); and DeFilippo’s son, Michael, participated in the ceremony.

Freeholder Chair Kowalski said: “Charlotte was ahead of her time. She was recruiting women in government long before the Me Too movement. I will be forever grateful to her for sharing her stories and advice. She helped to shape a generation of leaders around the State of New Jersey.”

Freeholder Garretson said: “Charlotte was a visionary and a brilliant strategist, whose mentorship and leadership set a very high bar for all of us. While she never sought attention for it, Charlotte was also a trailblazer and a role model for many women who pursued a career in public life.’

Later in her life, DeFilippo served for more than a decade as the Director of the Union County Improvement Authority where she worked to create a legacy of public projects that transformed both Union County and its municipal governments, and provided service to all citizens at every level of society.

Charlotte DeFilippo Park is located directly across from Hillside High School. The scenic park is set beside the Elizabeth River and contains a softball field and basketball court.

Ryan Patrick Faella Foundation’s 5K Run and Walk

Freeholder Chair Bette Jane Kowalski, Freeholder Chris Hudak, Freeholder Kimberly Palmieri-Mouded, and Freeholder Sergio Granados and Elizabeth Mayor Chris Bollwage joined former County Manager Al Faella and other County officials at the Ryan Patrick Faella Foundation’s 5 K Run and Walk at Oak Ridge Park in Clark on Sunday.
The Ryan Patrick Faella Foundation was established in memory of Ryan Patrick Faella, a thirteen-year-old boy from Mountainside, who passed away in 2000. Since 2001, over $125,000 has been provided toward scholarships and youth-based activities.

The organization was founded by Ryan’s parents. Al Faella, the former Union County Manager, and his wife Mary, Speech-Language Pathologist, both natives of Elizabeth who currently reside in Mountainside. John Amalfe, nephew of former Freeholder Anthony Amalfe, is also a founder and continued supporter.

County of Union, UNICO District X to hold 11th Annual Columbus Day Flag Raising 1 p.m.on Friday, October 11th at Union County Courthouse

Featuring State Senator Nicholas P. Scutari, Freeholder Vice Chairman Al Mirabella, County Surrogate Jim LaCorte, UNICO representatives, Italian American ONE VOICE Coalition

The Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders announced that Union County’s 11th Annual Columbus Day Flag Raising event is set for Friday, Oct. 11th, at 1 p.m., on the steps of the historic Union County Courthouse. Senator Nicholas P. Scutari will be this year’s special guest speaker.

“We have a great program this year in honor of the achievements and contributions of Italian Americans,” said Freeholder Vice Chairman Alexander Mirabella, who is emceeing the program, and founded the flag raising event. “Italian Americans continue to make extraordinary contributions to the rich, diverse fabric of America.”

Speakers include: State Senator Scutari; Union County Surrogate James S. LaCorte; Andre’ DiMino, Communications Director of the Italian American ONE VOICE Coalition; UNICO District X Governor Anthony Bengivenga,

UNICO is the nation’s largest Italian American service organization whose chapters and members engage in promoting and defending Italian culture and heritage, as well as providing scholarships, engaging in community service and other philanthropic endeavors.

UNICO District X and Plainfields’ UNICO work to organize and co-sponsor Union County’s Columbus Day event. The Italian American ONE VOICE Coalition is an Italian-American anti-bias organization formed of members nationwide that fights stereotypes, and promotes Columbus Day.

Italian-style refreshments and pastries will be served after the program in the historic Union County Courthouse. Parking (pay) is available in the Midtown area at the J. Christian Bollwage Parking deck at Elizabethtown Plaza and Caldwell Place. A second deck is Elizabeth’s Parking Deck No. 6 on Jefferson Avenue and Dickinson Street—the entrance is on Dickinson Street. In the event of rain, the event will be held in the Freeholder Chambers in the Union County Administration building.

The courthouse is located at 2 Broad St. in Elizabeth at the corner of Rahway Avenue.
