Elizabeth, New Jersey – Twelve Union County municipalities will receive new voting machines for the first time in 20 years on Election Day this November, and the Union County Board of Elections is encouraging voters become familiar with the new machines ahead of time, by visiting hands-on public demonstration sessions this summer and fall.
Voters in Clark, Cranford, Hillside, Linden, New Providence, Plainfield, Rahway, Roselle, Roselle Park, Scotch Plains, Springfield and Summit will use the new machines for the first time on Election Day, Tuesday November 5.
Voters in Berkeley Heights, Elizabeth, Fanwood, Garwood, Kenilworth, Mountainside, Union, Westfield and Winfield have already completed the transition to the new vote tabulation system.
“Voters who are already using the new machines have embraced the change. They appreciate the ease of the touch screen as well as the benefit of knowing their vote is properly recorded,” explained Nicole DiRado, Administrator at the Union County Board of Elections. “The public demonstrations provide voters with the opportunity to try out the new machines and see how the verified paper audit trail works, before they head to the polls in November.”
“Union County was among the first three counties in New Jersey to introduce the new voting machines last year, and we are looking forward to having this new technology available in all 21 of our municipalities,” said Freeholder Chair Bette Jane Kowalski. “I encourage all residents to attend one of the upcoming demonstration sessions and familiarize themselves with the new machines before the General Election in November.”
The Election Board has been conducting demonstrations throughout the summer. They will continue through the weekend leading up to Election Day.
Demonstrations are scheduled at the following locations every week, excluding holiday closures:
Colleen Fraser Building
300 North Avenue East, Westfield
Saturdays 9:00am – 1:00pm
Union County Courthouse
2 Broad Street, 1st Floor, Elizabeth
Tuesdays, 11:00am – 3:00pm
Visitors to Union County’s Summer Arts weekly series of free outdoor concerts will also have the opportunity to try the new machines. This year, Summer Arts will take place at Echo Lake Park in Mountainside on July 24 and July 31, and at Oak Ridge Park in Clark on August 7, 14, 21 and 28.
