Union County Fire Training Academy Graduation

Freeholder Hudak Honored by Raymond J. Lesniak Experience, Strength & Hope Recovery High School

Estrada joined former state Senator Raymond Lesniak and Union County Vocational-Technical Schools Board of Education President Jean Perkins in congratulating Freeholder Christopher Hudak on being awarded the Pamela Capaci Hero for Recovery Award during a ceremony for students graduating Raymond J. Lesniak Experience, Strength & Hope Recovery High School in Scotch Plains. Pamela Capaci, formerly the CEO of Prevention Links who was instrumental in establishing the school, presented the award to Freeholder Hudak.

Union County Freeholders Announce July Nature Retreat for Young Adults with Special Needs

Union County, NJ – Young adults with special needs, ages 18-21, are welcome to attend a three-day sensory friendly nature retreat from July 1-3 at Union County’s Trailside Nature and Science Center in the Watchung Reservation, Mountainside.

 “One outstanding feature of Union County’s Trailside Nature and Science Center is its sensory trail,” said Bette Jane Kowalski, Chair of the Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders. ‘The Freeholder Board is proud that Union County provides this nature retreat as a wonderful opportunity to enjoy our natural surroundings.”

Campers will enjoy both indoor and outdoor activities designed for people with special needs. The sensory trail is the most extensive in the nation, designed to stimulate cognitive, physical and social needs through vision, touch, smell and sound.

Union County Freeholders Announce Senior Farmers’ Market Voucher Distribution Dates

The Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders is pleased to announce that the annual Farmers’ Market voucher program for seniors will begin again this summer. Starting on June 27, income eligible adults age 60 and up can receive a total of $25 in free vouchers to purchase “Jersey Fresh” fruits, vegetables and herbs at several Farmers Markets throughout Union County. 

The total of $25 is provided in $5 increments, so that seniors can spread out their purchases to ensure freshness.

 “The Freeholder Board understands just how important it is that our senior residents on a budget have the resources to have access to fresh produce which is proven to have massive health benefits,” said Freeholder Chair Bette Jane Kowalski. “This year Warinanco Park in Roselle has been added to the voucher distribution sites.”

Eligible Union County adults can apply for the vouchers by visiting any of the designated distribution sites scheduled during June and July on the list below, or by calling the Union County Department of Human Services, Division on Aging and Disability Resource Connection toll free at 888-280-8226.

The vouchers may be used at any Farmers’ Market in Union County that displays the yellow and black WIC poster. As a convenience, farmers offering produce for sale will also be present at several of the voucher distribution sites.

A limited number of vouchers are available and will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.

To be eligible, a single person’s annual income cannot exceed $23,107 and a married couple’s combined income may not exceed $31,284. Proof of age, residency and income are required at the time of application.

A Medicaid card, SSI, SNAP, annual pension, or Social Security statement may serve as proof of eligibility. Proxies applying on another person’s behalf must present proof of eligibility for that person.

Just “ASK” for Information about Senior Services in Union County

Union County residents seeking reliable information about services for adults age 60 and older can come to convenient locations throughout the County and speak in person with experienced staff from the Union County Aging and Disability Resource Connection, a division of the Department of Human Services.

The community visits are scheduled every month through Union County’s ASK (Aging Services Kiosk) program. In June, the ASK program will come to public libraries in Westfield, Plainfield, Clark, Garwood, Elizabeth and Union, and to the Rahway Senior Center.

“Our goal is to help senior residents access the resources they need to stay connected with their communities,” said Freeholder Chair Bette Jane Kowalski. “The ASK program helps seniors, their families, and their caregivers get expert guidance in person, in a comfortable setting close to home.”

Guidance offered through the ASK program includes home delivered meals, respite care, home care, adult day care, and support services for caregivers.

Assistance with completing applications and forms is also provided.

All Union County residents are welcome to attend any ASK event. Please note that due to a staff vacancy, bilingual assistance at the ASK events is temporarily unavailable. The dates and locations for June are:

Sólo Pregunte por “Información” sobre los Servicios Para Adultos Mayores en el Condado de Union

Los residentes del Condado de Union que andan en búsqueda de información sobre los servicios disponibles para los adultos mayores de 60 años  les proporcionamos una lista de fechas  y lugares para que puedan hablar con personal del Departamento de Servicios Humanos, División de Adultos (Envejecientes) sobre los diferentes programas que hay disponibles.

El personal estará presente en las bibliotecas públicas de Westfield, Plainfield, Clark, Garwood, Elizabeth y Union. En  Rahway tendrá lugar en el Rahway Senior Center.

“Nuestra meta es de ayudar a los residentes a obtener información sobre los programas y servicios disponibles a los adultos mayores y aquellos que cuidan de ellos,” dijo la Legisladora Presidente  Chair Bette Jane Kowalski. “Este programa trae la experiencia del personal de la División de Adultos Envejecientes, que se encuentra en Elizabeth, a lugares a lo largo del Condado de Union para facilitarlo a todos sus residentes.”

La Trituradora Ambulante del Condado de Union Regresa a Clark en Junio

La Junta de Legisladores del Condado de Union se complace en anunciar que el programa de la trituradora ambulante  estará en la ciudad de Clark en el mes de junio.

El miércoles 12 de junio la Trituradora Ambulante se encontrará en el patio del Clark Public Works situado en el  315 Westfield Avenue en Clark. 

“La Trituradora del Condado de Union ayuda a los residents a prevenir el robo de identidad destruyendo los documentos confidenciales,” dijo la Legisladora Presidente Bette Jane Kowalski. “El programa también apoya nuestros otros programas ambientales.”

El evento se llevará a cabo de  9:00 a.m. a 1:00 p.m., llueva o brille.

Todos los residentes del Condado de Union pueden participar en este servicio. Para poder acomodar a todos los participantes  hay un límite por persona de 4 bolsas o cajas de 10 libras cada una.

Se les avisa a los residentes que los documentos no pueden estar prescillados o en carpetas. Documentos mojados o húmedos no son aceptados.

Los documentos se ponen en un contenedos de 96 galones . Luego se vacían en una cinta transportadora y pasan a la trituradora. Los documentos destruídos son reciclados y enviados a los molinos de papel. Los residentes están bienvenidos a ver el proceso a través de una television de circuito cerrado.

Este programa ha sido pagado con fondos del Departamento de Protección Ambiental y Mejoras de Reciclaje.

The Boy Band Project Headlines Union County PRIDE in the Park, June 15

– La Junta de Legisladores del Condado le da la bienvenida a The Boy Band Project que encabezará la Celebración de PRIDE / ORGULLO del Condado de Union en el Parque de Rahway el sábado 15 de junio. PRIDE? ORGULLO  en el Parque es una celebración de familia, diversidad, aceptación e igualdad con un día lleno de actividades gratis que comienzan al mediodía.

Los fanáticos de la Banda Boy de todas las edades  están invitados a celebrar los talentos de de Broadway presentando lo mejor de la música de los 90. Haciendo su espectacular presentación a las 3:00 p.m., The Boy Band Project estrenará su nuevo sencillo durante su presentación. Después acompañenos a conocer los artistas.

“PRIDE / ORGULLO en el parque  es el evento principal del Condado de Union para celebrar diversidad y afirmar el respeto por todas las familias ,” expresó la Legisladora Presidenta Bette Jane Kowalski. “La Junta de Legisladores  está encantada con ser la anfitriona de The Boy Band Project.”

El evento del Condado de Union PRIDE / ORGULLO en el Parque incluye una agenda completa de diversión y entretenimiento. Artes y manualidades, juegos, música y muchas más actividades.

Experimenten con Rizzo y su Mundo de Fauna Silvestre con serpientes, largatos y más su presentación es a la 1:00 p.m. Un mitin de igualdad presentando a Drag Queen Harmonica Sunbeam como maestro de ceremonia a las 2:30 pm con invitados especiales y oradores.

“Los eventos de Orgullo hacen la diferencia, y existe una urgencia en nuestra comunidad,” dijo la Legisladora Rebecca Williams, enlace con el Comité LGBTQ Ad Hoc del Condado de Union.. “La Junta de Legisladores se enorgullece en proporcionar un espacio para la comunidad  LGBTQ y nuestros aliados  para luchar por la igualdad.”

La Oficina de Asuntos de LGBTQ es una plataforma de liderazgo y colaboración para apoyar  la iguladad, y además sirve como  catalizador para la defensa y concientización de los asuntos que impactan la vida de los individuos homosexuales y transgénero.
