Storm Prep Tips

Union County has seen severe weather in recent weeks—and while another storm isn’t guaranteed, there is potential for more in the coming days. Union County is actively preparing and maintaining county properties and we encourage residents to take a few simple steps now to prepare at home.

Storm Prep Tips:

✔ Clear leaves and debris from storm drains near your property
✔ Secure outdoor furniture, trash bins, and decorations
✔ Charge phones and portable batteries
✔ Check flashlights and stock extra batteries
✔ Avoid parking under trees or in flood-prone areas
✔ Keep important documents in a waterproof container
✔ Fill your gas tank and have some cash on hand, just in case
✔ Don’t drive through flooded roads or large puddles
✔ Stay indoors during heavy winds and rain
✔ Check on your neighbors, especially seniors or those with disabilities
✔ Only call 911 for true emergencies to avoid overwhelming dispatch

Being proactive can make all the difference. Stay alert, stay safe, and follow Union County for updates.

The State of New Jersey continues to be under a state of emergency.

We would like the opportunity to once again remind all employees that the County of Union offices do not close during major weather or storm events.

As is the County of Union’s practice, if anyone feels they cannot safely travel to or from work during these possible weather events, please consider using vacation or personal time to stay home.  As per resolution 2014-481, in the event that the Governor declares a State of Emergency, employees will be permitted to use their available sick, vacation, personal or comp time for their absence.  If no accrued leave time is available, employees may take the day without pay.

To ensure all County of Union employees can easily access information during such weather events, we will utilize all media channels below to ensure redundancy and availability:

  • UC-First Alert – www.ucfirstalert.org Register your e-mail address and mobile phone numbers to receive notifications.
  • County website – www.ucnj.org Alerts will be posted on the County’s home page. The website can be viewed easily from your computer, mobile and tablet devices.
  • County’s Social Media Channels – Facebook | Instagram

Partial Reopening of Echo Lake Dog Park – Thursday, July 10

The Union County Board of County Commissioners and the Union County Parks Department anticipate a partial reopening of the Echo Lake Dog Park onThursday, July 10, 2025. While we know many residents are eager for full access, this limited reopening is necessary to comply with state conservation requirements and allow new grass to continue growing.

Both the large and small dog park areas will be open in a reduced capacity. Temporary fencing has been installed to section off areas still under restoration.

Please be aware of the following temporary conditions:

  • 🐶 Entrances have changed — please follow on-site signage to access each area.
  • 🚫 ADA accessibility to the large dog area is currently unavailable during this phase.
  • 🚱 No water source is available in the large dog area — please bring your own water for your pets.

We appreciate your patience and cooperation as we continue making progress toward a full reopening.
