SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ – Union County Clerk Joanne Rajoppi will host an educational seminar open to all Notaries Public on March 20, together with Union County Freeholder Chairman Mohamed S. Jalloh, Esq., a partner at the law firm of Jalloh and Jalloh, LLC, and an adjunct professor at Kean University.

The seminar will be presented on Friday, March 20, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the John H. Stamler Police Academy, located at 1776 Raritan Road, Scotch Plains, in the Glass Classroom, 2^nd Floor.

To register for this seminar, contact the Union County Clerk’s Office at 908-527-4787. The course is limited to 50 attendees and the registration fee of $5.00 is required in advance.

The Notary Public course is a new service being offered by the Office of the Union County Clerk. It is designed to instruct Notaries Public on how to perform their duties with confidence and diligence. Notaries will learn about the new online application process and the legal aspects of performing the duties of a Notary Public in an effort to avoid liability issues.

The Union County Clerk’s Office administers Oaths of Office to commissioned Notaries at two convenient locations in Westfield and Elizabeth. The Elizabeth office, located at 2 Broad Street, Room 114, is open from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. The Westfield Annex Office, located in the Colleen Fraser Building, 300 North Avenue East, in Westfield, is open Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.; Tuesday and Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.; and Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Union County, NJ – The popular Union County Child Safety Seat Inspection Program will be up and running this week at its new location, the Garwood Rescue Squad at 401 2^nd Avenue in Garwood.

This week, the Seat Inspection Program will be open on Wednesday, February 4 and Thursday, February 5, 7:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. No appointment is necessary. Union County also periodically hosts bicycle safety events. A free bicycle helmet, provided by the County of Union with funds from a NJDHTS Traffic Safety Education Grant, will be given on a first-come, first-served basis to caregivers using the Seat Inspection Program this week. A bicycle helmet decorating station will be set up for children during the event.

After this week, the program will be open every Wednesday and Thursday (except holidays), 7:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. No appointment necessary.

The proper use of child safety seats is one of the simplest and most effective methods available for protecting the lives of young children in the event of a motor vehicle accident.

 “If you have a baby or small child in your care, please come and take advantage of this free program, and make sure your safety seat is properly adjusted,” said Union County Freeholder Chairman Mohamed S. Jalloh. “Our experts can help you get familiar with a new seat, and they can help you spot any problems with an older seat.”

Union County first launched the Child Safety Seat Inspection Program in 1999, in response to surveys showing that the overwhelming majority of child safety seats are improperly installed, even though most users are confident that they know the correct procedure.

Since 1999, approximately 50,000 Union County residents and visitors have used the Seat Inspection Program. It is staffed by personnel from the County’s Department of Public Safety, who are certified by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and by the organization SafeKids. The program is credited with saving at least one life, when a toddler survived a 2008 vehicle rollover shortly after the seat was properly adjusted by County personnel.

The child seat inspection program is provided as a public service by the Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders, Union County Police Department, New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety, AAA Northeast – NJ Division, and the Garwood First Aid Squad.

Union County, NJ – If you are planning a community or school gardening project this summer, be sure to catch the “Get Your Youth and Community Garden Growing” workshop on Saturday, February 28, at the Trailside Nature and Science Center, 452 New Providence Road in Mountainside. Experienced and beginning gardeners are welcome.

Get Your Youth and Community Garden Growing is presented by experts from the Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Union County.

Topics include quick container gardening, how to grow strawberries, merging garden activities with lesson plans, and the basics of a successful produce garden.

Do you like working with artists, teachers and students? The Union County Teen Arts Festival provides an opportunity for volunteers to get involved.

The Union County Teen Arts Festival is a two-day celebration of the arts. It is held annually at Union County College in Cranford and is sponsored by the Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders through the Office of Cultural and Heritage Affairs in the Department of Parks and Recreation.

This year’s Teen Arts Festival is scheduled for Thursday and Friday, March 19 and March 20. The event is open to all students from public, charter, private and parochial middle and high schools in Union County.

“Nearly 3,500 students participate in performances, critiquing seminars, master classes and workshops with a staff of 55 professional artists in every discipline – visual art, music, creative writing, theater and dance,” said Freeholder Chairman Mohamed S. Jalloh.

“Volunteers are needed to assist artists with workshops, manage performance sites and staff information stations. We appreciate the invaluable assistance of our county residents with this exciting program.”

Union County Freeholder Chairman Mohamed Jalloh and Freeholders Linda Carter and Christopher Hudak present resolutions to members of Team Light Blue congratulating them on winning the civic engagement challenge of 2015 Union County Student Training and Enrichment Program (UC STEP).

UC STEP was created to provide high school students the opportunity to develop a countywide community service around a topic they feel is important, while teaching them leadership and personal growth skills and responsibility within their communities.

A total of 192 sophomore and junior high school students from 21 high schools throughout Union County participated in the second annual program, which took place in December 2014 at Kean University.

Team Light Blue’s campaign, “Donate to Educate”- Schools Supplying Schools, won the civic engagement challenge and will be the county-wide community service project undertaken by participating Union County high schools in 2015.

Team Blue members attend the following high schools: Union Catholic Regional High School, Governor Livingston High School, UC Academy for Information Technology (AIT), Arthur L. Johnson High School, Barack Obama Green Charter High School, Cranford High School, David Brearley High School, UC Magnet High School, Summit High School, UC Academy for Allied Health Sciences (AAHS), John E. Dwyer Technology Academy, Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School and Union High School.

MOUNTAINSIDE, NJ – The Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders is pleased to present special programs for families and adults.  To kick off the Presidents’ holiday weekend a free re-enactment of part of the life of Franklin D. Roosevelt, for adults 18 years and older, at Trailside Nature and Science Center in Mountainside will be presented on Friday, February 13 from 7:15 to 8:15 p.m. as part of the February Festivities programming.

The date is December 29, 1940, Franklin Roosevelt has just been re-elected to an unprecedented third term in office. But the world is in crisis.  Europe and America may soon be drawn into war.  Learn what President Roosevelt was thinking. Listen to his plea for the support of our Allies.  Experience firsthand the history that shaped our nation.  Neill Hartley, of the American Historical Theatre, portrays F.D.R. in a fully staged historical presentation, which brings to life the background behind the famous address that implored:  “We must be an arsenal for democracy.”  This program is made possible in part by funding from the New Jersey Council for the Humanities.  The program is free but donations are welcomed.  

“Here is a chance to relive historic events that happened 75 years ago, as history comes alive with this dramatic performance,” says Freeholder Chairman Mohamed S. Jalloh.

MOUNTAINSIDE, NJ – The Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders and the Department of Parks and Recreation are pleased to announce a new and exciting season of summer camps and family programs at Trailside Nature & Science Center.

“Trailside summer programs offer adults and children a great opportunity to explore the outdoors while learning about nature,” said Freeholder Chairman Mohamed S. Jalloh.  “Each Trailside camp and family program is filled with hands-on, educational activities that encourage a child’s natural curiosity. Theme hikes, games and crafts are all part of the Trailside experience.”

Due to the popularity of Trailside’s summer programs, a lottery system will be used beginning Saturday, February 7 and continuing through Friday, February 20, or until all numbers have been drawn. Union County residents may visit Trailside to draw a lottery number from noon – 5 p.m. daily.  Proof of residency, such as a driver’s license, will be required to draw a number and only one number may be drawn per family/address.  Registrants must pick their own lottery ticket for their family, and each registrant’s name, address, lottery number and arrival time will be recorded when the lottery number is chosen.  The number drawn will indicate the registrant’s position on line and time of arrival for registration day, scheduled for Saturday, March 7. 

Summer Registration will begin at 8 a.m. on Saturday, March 7 for Union County residents who have drawn a lottery ticket.  Registrants must bring their ticket with them to register and must be present when their number is called or their position in line will be forfeited. Each ticket holder may only register their child/family.  If a registrant arrives after their number is called, but within their designated registration hour indicated on their lottery ticket, they may register at the end of the one-hour time block.  If the registrant misses their one hour time block entirely, they may return at 3:30 p.m. to register.  No exceptions will be made.

Registration for out-of-county residents will begin Monday, March 9, from noon – 4:45 p.m.  Lottery tickets will not be required and registration will continue until all programs are filled.

Union County Baseball Association Also Honors Student Athletes at 79^th Annual Dinner to Benefit Youth Baseball Leagues

MOUNTAINSIDE, NJ – Roy White, former New York Yankees All-Star outfielder and two-time World Series champion, will be the special guest speaker at the 79^th Annual Hot Stove League Baseball Dinner on Sunday, February 8, starting at 1:00 p.m. in the L’Affaire Banquet Center, 1099 Route 22 East, in Mountainside.

The awards dinner is sponsored by the Union County Baseball Association (UCBA), in cooperation with the Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders and the Union County Department of Parks and Recreation. Since 1937, the Hot Stove League Baseball Dinner has been the primary fund-raiser for the UCBA’s summer and fall programs for young ballplayers.

During the afternoon awards ceremonies, the UCBA will induct four new members into the Union County Baseball Hall of Fame: Jorge Comas of Elizabeth, Barry Kaverick of Kenilworth, Richard McCormack of Elizabeth, and Jack Shaw of Roselle Park.

“We’re delighted to welcome Roy White to this year’s Hot Stove League Awards Dinner,” said Freeholder Chairman Mohamed Jalloh. “We hope that family members, teammates and friends of the Hall of Fame inductees and the very deserving young local honorees will enjoy the Sunday afternoon ceremonies and support youth baseball in Union County.”

Among the young local ball players to be honored for their athletic achievements are: Nick Christiani of Linden, Chrissy Ferraro of Westfield, Rebecca Rotola of Linden, and Tommy Trotter of Cranford.

The Hot Stove League Baseball Dinner also will honor athletes from local youth baseball leagues for their achievements in 2014.

Union County, NJ – The Board of Chosen Freeholders reminds residents that five Union County parks are designated for sledding:

• Briant Park (Summit)
• Echo Lake Park (the “Summer Arts Hill” near Springfield Avenue in Westfield)
• Lenape Park ( in Cranford, in areas that are not close to waterways)
• Meisel Park (Springfield, in the detention basin area)
• Unami Park (Garwood)

“Fortunately, Union County was spared the worst of the storm, but school closures are still in effect today so it’s safe to assume that many young people will be out enjoying themselves in the snow,” said Freeholder Chairman Mohamed S. Jalloh. “Please be careful and dress warm.”

To avoid tree hazards, sledders in Union County parks are strongly advised to avoid sledding devices that cannot be steered.

Downhill skiing is strictly prohibited in all County parks, but cross-country skiing is permitted in the following parks:

• Ash Brook Golf Course (Scotch Plains)
• Oak Ridge Golf Course (Clark)
• Watchung Reservation (Mountainside)

Skating on natural waterways in County parks is contingent on the availability of at least four inches of clear ice as measured by Parks officials in accordance with widely accepted safety standards. No waterways have met that standard so far this winter.

Union County’s indoor Warinanco Ice Skating Center is closed today, but it will be open for business as usual on Wednesday, January 28.

Watchung Stable and the Trailside Nature and Science Center are also closed today and will resume normal operations on Wednesday, January 28.
