The Union County Sheriff’s Office (UCSO) is warning residents about an ongoing phone scam in which scammers impersonate law enforcement and falsely claim that the person has an arrest warrant.

Scammers inform victims that they missed jury duty or failed to appear for a court date and must pay fines immediately to avoid arrest. The fraudsters even go so far as to spoof official law enforcement phone numbers, use real names of officials, and send fake warrant documents with the victim’s name. It is crucial to understand that these calls are attempts to steal money from victims.

WHEN IN DOUBT, HANG UP! Law enforcement agencies will NEVER request payment over the phone to avoid arrest, cancel a warrant, or make threats if action is not taken. We will also never request payment in the form of gift cards, prepaid cards, or cryptocurrency. If you receive a call making such requests, refuse and hang up. (No report is necessary.) If you fall victim to these scams or have already, please contact your local law enforcement agency to file a police report.

The Union County Board of County Commissioners, in collaboration with the American Job Center, invites interested residents to the Pathways to Employment Job Fair on Monday, March 10^th from 10:00am-2:00pm at Warinanco Sports Center, located at 1 Park Drive in Roselle.

“These events are valuable resource for job seekers to connect with top employers across different fields of interest, opening doors to new careers,” said Union County Chairwoman Lourdes M. Leon. “Our past job fairs have successfully helped many residents secure meaningful employment. Providing opportunities for residents to build their futures and achieve their career goals is a priority.”

This employment fair is completely free and open to all Union County residents. Attendees will have the opportunity to connect with over 30 companies from a variety of industries, including FedEx, American Red Cross, Port Authority, and the U.S. Navy.

“A thriving job market is essential to a strong community,” said Commissioner Sergio Granados, Liaison to the Workforce Development Board. “Job fairs provide Union County residents with a unique opportunity to connect with both local businesses and nationally recognized companies. By connecting job seekers with employers, we are helping residents secure opportunities that contribute to their professional growth while strengthening the local economy.”

The Union County Board of County Commissioners, in partnership with the Union County Sheriff’s Office, is offering a free self-defense class for women ages 18 and older on Tuesday, March 11, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.This hands-on class will be held in the gym at the John H. Stamler Police Academy, located at 1776 Raritan Road in Scotch Plains.

“After seeing such an incredible response last year and receiving so much positive feedback, I knew we had to bring this program back,” said Commissioner Chairwoman Lourdes M. Leon. “Many women shared how empowered they felt after attending, and countless others requested additional classes so they, too, could participate. As part of this year’s Union County 2025: Connecting Communities, Committed to Progress initiative, we remain dedicated to expanding programs that directly enhance our residents’ safety and confidence. This class exemplifies that mission, and I encourage all Union County women ages 18 and over to take advantage of this free opportunity to learn essential self-defense skills. The well-being and security of women in our community remain a top priority.”

Experienced and certified officers will guide participants through effective self-defense moves, safety precautions, and strategies to minimize potential dangers. This class is designed for women to build confidence and gain skills to protect themselves and their loved ones, empowering them to respond to possible threats.

“Self-defense training is not just about learning techniques—it’s about creating awareness, confidence, and the ability to act under pressure,” said Union County Sheriff Peter Corvelli. “We are proud to partner with the Union County Commissioners in offering this invaluable program once again. The Union County Board of County Commissioners and the Union County Department of Parks and Recreation are excited to announce the return of Union County’s annual Woodcock Talk and Walk Events to Watchung Reservation and Lenape Park. The events include a special PowerPoint presentation and guided indoor/outdoor experience that will explore the lifestyle and behaviors of this remarkably unique species.

“This event offers a wonderful opportunity for our community to mark the first signs of spring together, learn more about this curious little bird, and understand the significance of protecting our natural open spaces,” said Union County Commissioner Chairwoman Lourdes Leon. “Join us as we discuss the American Woodcock and the importance of working together to preserve and protect our local ecosystems. By doing so, we’ll ensure that this unique species can continue to call Union County their home for years to come.”

The first Woodcock Talk & Walk event of the season will take place on Tuesday, March 11th from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Masker’s Barn, located within the Deserted Village of the Watchung Reservation, 13 Cataract Hollow Road in Berkeley Heights. A second event will be held on Thursday, March 20th, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Lenape Park, located at 130 Kenilworth Boulevard in Cranford.

The free events provide seasoned bird lovers and beginners alike the opportunity to catch a glimpse of the American Woodcock and learn more about the elusive species. Also known as the Timberdoodle, Labrador Twister, Night Partridge, mudbat or bog sucker, the American Woodcock has several distinct features. Aside from its rotund, orange-fluff belly, long bill, and short legs, the Woodcock is also recognized for its preference for damp, dense woodlands and can usually be found probing moist soil for earthworms or insects.

One of the most captivating features of the American Woodcock is the acrobatic courtship displays performed by the males. During mating season, male Woodcocks engage in twisting “sky dances” ascending to heights of 200 to 300 feet. The aerial performance is accompanied by a musical twittering sound as their wings climb through the air. They emit chirping notes as they zigzag back down towards the ground.

Participants are advised to dress warmly, wear sturdy shoes, and bring a flashlight. As always, the Woodcock Talk & Walk event is free and open to adults and children ages 10 and up accompanied by an adult. Both events will be led and presented by experienced nature enthusiast Peter Axelrod. Pete’s passion for the outdoors led him to study Wildlife Biology and Natural History Interpretation. His experience includes volunteering in avian population studies, wild bird rehabilitation, habitat restoration, and wildlife education. Additionally, Pete has led multiple birding ventures throughout New Jersey, collaborating with organizations such as the New Jersey Audubon, Friends of Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge, and The Raptor Trust.

The Union County Board of County Commissioners invites seniors and caregivers to the upcoming Aging Services Kiosk (ASK) events to explore the wide range of senior programs and resources available. These events allow attendees to meet with experienced professionals who can offer expert guidance and assistance with a variety of services, including form completion. Bilingual staff will be available at all dates in March to provide support in Spanish.

“Our ASK kiosks are staffed by friendly professionals who are eager to provide seniors and caregivers with the most up-to-date information and resources, ensuring that this community has access to all programs and services available,” said Union County Commissioner Chairwoman Lourdes Leon. “I also want to remind residents that our kiosks are free and walk-in friendly; no appointment needed.”

The Aging Services Kiosk is operated explicitly by the Division on Aging, a branch of the Union County Department of Human Services. It offers adults aged 60 and older, along with their caregivers, a friendly and convenient avenue to discover valuable programs and services and speak individually with a Division on Aging professional.

Staff at ASK locations can help older adults and caregivers connect with various services, including home-delivered meals, respite care, home care, adult day care, and support services for caregivers. Any Union County senior or caregiver can visit any ASK kiosk, regardless of their hometown.  No appointment or pre-registration is needed. Below are the upcoming ASK events in March:

Union County Clerk Joanne Rajoppi advises that the U.S. Department of State has ceased issuing passports with the “X” gender marker, which prior to January 20, 2025, was available to non-binary individuals who do not identify as strictly male or female. As a result, applications submitted with an “X” gender marker have been placed on hold by the Federal Government.

On February 11, 2025, Secretary of State Marco Rubio further instructed State Department staff to assign a male or female sex designation to transgender passport applicants already submitted. If sufficient evidence of biological sex at birth is not provided, applications will be suspended until appropriate documentation is submitted.

For individuals currently holding passports with an “X” gender marker, we recommend contacting the U.S. Department of State for guidance on obtaining a new passport with a male or female designation. For further information or assistance regarding the recent policy change, please contact the U.S. Department of State or visit their official website at www.state.gov.

Union County Clerk Joanne Rajoppi acknowledges the challenges this policy shift may present to our community members who have already applied through one of her Office’s two locations for a passport. “While our Office does not have the authority to override these Federally mandated changes, we stand in solidarity with those affected and regret any inconvenience caused. This action, which began via a Presidential Executive Order, is beyond our jurisdiction,” she added.

The Union County Clerk’s Office remains committed to assisting Union County residents with their passport needs. We provide passport services in two locations on a regular basis, in Elizabeth and Westfield. Services are by appointment only due to a significant increase in demand for passports. The Union County Board of County Commissioners is excited to announce a new partnership with Helpsy, a leading sustainable clothing and textile recycling company, to launch a County-wide used clothing and accessory recycling program. This initiative, set to launch in the City of Plainfield, the Township of Scotch Plains, and the City of Summit, aims to reduce waste, support environmental sustainability, and provide residents with an easy and accessible way to recycle unwanted clothing and accessories.

“As part of my 2025 Chairwoman’s initiatives, Union County 2025: Connecting Communities, Committed to Progress, we are proud to prioritize environmental sustainability through innovative programs like this new partnership with Helpsy,” said Commissioner Chairwoman Lourdes Leon. “This initiative provides our residents with a simple and convenient way to recycle unwanted clothing and textiles, reducing waste and contributing to a healthier planet. Union County has long been a leader in environmental stewardship, and this year, we are doubling down on our commitment to creating a greener future for our communities.

Helpsy will supply designated drop-off bins for used clothing, shoes, accessories, and household linens    —regardless of condition—as long as these items are dry and odor-free, helping to divert them from local landfills. The collected items will be repurposed for resale, reuse, and recycling. Residents can drop off their items for free at the following locations:

Helpsy, a certified B-Corp and Public Benefit Corporation, is a recognized leader in sustainable clothing recycling. Their mission is to keep textiles out of landfills while promoting environmentally friendly practices. Helpsy kept over 31 million pounds of clothing, shoes, and other items from entering the waste stream, which is equivalent to 100 items of clothing every minute.

The launch of this program is part of Union County’s continuous efforts to promote sustainability, reduce waste, and encourage responsible consumption. Union County encourages all residents to take advantage of this opportunity to declutter and recycle their unwanted textiles in a responsible and eco-friendly manner.

The Union County Board of County Commissioners invites families to visit Union County’s Trailside Nature and Science Center in Mountainside on Saturday, February 15^th for “February Festivities” – a winter series of indoor and outdoor family fun programs taking place during President’s Day Weekend.

“February Festivities at Trailside offers a wide variety of entertaining and engaging programs designed to delight residents of all ages,” said Union County Commissioner Chairwoman Lourdes Leon. “Along with special programs like February Festivities, Trailside is open year-round for visitors to walk through and explore the exhibits. All families are welcome to visit Trailside and join us for a fun winter day.”

This year, the February Festivities programs will include:

9:30 A.M. or 12:30 P.M. – The Journey of Sap to Syrup – Visitors will see how real maple syrup is made from the sap of a sugar maple tree. Find out what equipment is needed to collect sap and take part in a taste test to see if you can identify the real thing. Weather-appropriate dressing is strongly encouraged.

11:15 A.M. – Fantasy, Illusion & Magic – Adults and children can enjoy a performance filled with magic, audience participation, comedy, and excitement in this live show featuring magician Joe Fischer. No strollers allowed in the auditorium.

1:30 P.M. – Lasermania – Join Prismatic Magic’s Lasermania and dive into the wonderful world of laser light. Enjoy a dazzling laser light show set to a compilation of current musical hits guaranteed to bring the house down.

2:30 P.M. – Winter Walk Scavenger Hunt – Investigate the winter woods for buck rubs, bird nests, and bright, red berries. Visitors will warm up around a campfire with hot chocolate and marshmallows as we review our wintry findings.

The programs are recommended for families with children ages four and older. Pre-registration is required for all sessions. The fee per person, per program is $8.00 for Union County residents and $10.00 for non-county residents.
