hazardous waste event flyerUnion County residents can safely dispose their unwanted household chemicals, old fire extinguishers, propane tanks and other potentially hazardous items at Union County’s next free Household Hazardous Waste event on Saturday, June 4, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Kean Hall parking lot at Kean University, located at 1000 Morris Avenue in Union Township. Any Union County resident may participate, regardless of their home town.

“Our Household Hazardous Waste events provide a free, convenient opportunity for residents to remove unwanted chemicals and other potentially hazardous items from their homes and yards, and dispose of them safely,” said Commissioner Board Chair Rebecca Williams. “It’s a great way to make a real difference and help keep harmful substances out of the environment.”

Items accepted for disposal include outdated or unwanted household chemicals, mercury thermostats and thermometers, propane tanks, and automobile tires among many other items such as oil-based paint (no latex paint) and varnish, antifreeze, aerosol cans, pool chemicals, corrosives, pesticides, herbicides, solvents, thinners, fire extinguishers, motor oil and oil filters, gasoline, batteries, fluorescent bulbs (unbroken), mercury switches, and more.

A complete list of accepted items is available at ucnj.org/recycling/household-special-waste.

Only materials in original or labeled containers will be accepted. No containers larger than five gallons will be accepted.

Car tires are accepted at these events. There is a limit of eight automobile tires, without rims, per household.

Union County Recognizes National Mental Health Awareness Month with Free Mental Health Webinar

In a resolution passed last week at the Union County Board of County Commissioners meeting, the Commissioners designated May as National Mental Health Awareness Month. In recognition of this month, the Department of Human Service’s Office on Behavioral Health and Substance Abuse in partnership with Atlantic Health System will host a free webinar titled, “Mental Health 101: How Do We Talk About Mental Health.”

mental health 101 flyer

“Mental and emotional wellbeing is an important component of our overall health, which allows us to have strong relationships with ourselves, our family or friends, colleagues, or neighbors in general,” said Commissioner Chair Rebecca Williams. “My 2022 Chair Initiatives are “Connecting our Community” and one of my main focuses as part of the initiatives is “Making Connections for Mental Health and Wellbeing,” where connecting the community to needed resources is key to access and wellness.”

Since the start of the pandemic, an increasing number of people are talking about mental health and its importance to overall health, but mental health conditions, resources, and conversations can still feel complicated and confusing.

This webinar, which will be hosted by Sharon Kelly, LCSW of Atlantic Behavioral Health & CONCERN EAP, will feature a discussion where residents can learn the basics about mental health and how they can strengthen their own health. “This is a great opportunity to check in with your health and the health of our fellow community members.  More importantly, this is an opportunity to learn where to go if you or someone you know, needs additional support.”

The webinar will take place on Thursday, May 19, 2022 at 7:00 p.m. via Zoom. Pre-registration is required and interested residents can register to join the webinar by registering at Webinar Registration – Zoom.

For more information about this webinar, please call Atlantic Behavioral Health at 973-579-8573. To learn more about the mental health services the County of Union provides, please visit www.ucnj.org/departments/human-services/mental-health-services/.

During National Community Action Month and throughout the year, Community Action Agencies put a human face on poverty while helping people and changing lives.  For 58 years they have advocated for limited-income citizens without a voice, so that they may enter the middle class and reach for the American dream, replacing their despair with opportunity.

National Community Action Month is an opportunity to call attention to poverty-related problems.  As Community Action Agencies are showcasing their programs, they are also giving local residents—many who are unaware of the poverty in their communities—a first-hand look at the struggles low-income families face and how Community Action programs help them.
