Union County Sheriff’s Office Offering Pistol Range Safety Class

The Union County Sheriff’s Office will offer an orientation/safety course to members of the public who would like to use the Union County Sheriff’s Office Pistol Range. The firearms facility will be open to the public on Sundays beginning May 1st.

The half-hour long course is designed to inform civilian shooters of the policies and standard operation procedures at the Union County Sheriff’s Office Pistol Range in order to provide the safest environment for recreational shooting. It is not a firearms training course.

A valid firearms identification card and a valid form of photo identification are required in order to attend the orientation/safety course which is mandatory for anyone wishing to use the range. Other safety courses or the NJ Division of Fish and Game Hunter Safety Course do not qualify as substitutes for the range course.

Upon completion of the course, participants will receive a Union County Sheriff’s Office Pistol Range Safety Card which must be presented during each visit to the range.

The range orientation/safety course will be held on April 14th, 18th, 21st and 25th at 7p.m. at the Union County Sheriff’s Office Pistol Range located at 301 Shunpike Road in Springfield.

The course will also be offered on the first Thursday of every month at 7 p.m. at the range. No class will be held in July.

The fee for the course and safety identification card is $20 for Union County residents. The fee is $10 for Union County senior citizens and youths between 12 and 17 years old. For non-county residents the fee is $30 and $15 for out-of-county seniors and youths. These fees do no include range time which is $10 per hour.

The Union Sheriff’s Office Pistol Range will be open for public use on Sundays from 12:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. from May through December. Shooters must present their Sheriff’s Office Pistol Range Safety Card and valid NJ Firearms ID card. Shooters must also provide their own targets, target frame/hanger and ammunition. Handguns are not to be greater than .45 in caliber. Magnum ammunition is not allowed. Only rifles of .22 caliber may be used.
