ELIZABETH, NJ – In observance of Black History Month, the Freeholders Gallery features an exhibit of vintage photographs of “Union County Black Soldiers and Sailors of the Civil War” from a book of the same name by Ethel M. Washington, designer and curator of the show. The exhibit, which highlights Black and Mulatto soldiers and sailors who enlisted in the Union Army and U.S. Navy at the time of the Civil War, includes period documents, a photo of two female slaves and a photo of slave quarters in Elizabeth. The Freeholders Gallery is located on the 6th floor of the Union County Administration Building, 10 Elizabethtown Plaza in Elizabeth. The exhibit is open to the public from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on weekdays through March 2.

“The Board of Chosen Freeholders is proud to present this timely exhibit,” said Freeholder Bette Jane Kowalski, liaison to the Cultural and Heritage Programs Advisory Board. “Public interest in the Civil War is increasing both nationally and locally with observance of the 150th Anniversary of the war.”

This accurate and thoughtful photographic display is presented in conjunction with another exhibit, “Preserving the Union,” that is located in the nearby Rotunda of the County Courthouse. The collection of artifacts in the courthouse emphasizes the experiences of Union County citizens during the Civil War in the area of the home front, the military, and the political and economic life of the county. “Preserving the Union” is presented by the Union County Civil War Sesquicentennial Committee and runs through 2015, the period of national observance. The Courthouse is located at 2 Broad Street in Historic Mid-Town Elizabeth. The exhibit may be viewed weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

MOUNTAINSIDE, NJ – The Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders and the Department of Parks and Community Renewal are pleased to offer a magical matinee at Trailside Nature & Science Center on Monday, Feb. 20, as part of Trailside’s February Festivities. Joe Fischer will captivate the audience with his spell-binding magic tricks on the Presidents’ Day holiday with his show, “Hocus Pocus.”

“This matinee, as well as all of the programs during February Festivities, is being offered on the school holiday to give families an opportunity to enjoy creative and interactive programs that will teach, entertain and delight children of all ages,” said Freeholder Chairman Alexander Mirabella. “Union County is committed to providing affordable family fun at our facilities and this exceptional show is part of that commitment.”

“Hocus Pocus” begins at 1:30 p.m. and runs approximately 45 minutes. The show is recommended for children ages 4 and older. Admission is $4 per person. Tickets go on sale at 1:00 p.m. before the matinee. Strollers are not permitted in the auditorium.

Joe Fischer offers a fast-paced show with the perfect blend of magic, comedy, audience participation and excitement. “Hocus Pocus” is sure to astound, baffle and thrill the audience – and teach them a few things about the basics of magic – as Joe shares his love of the magician’s art with others.

Union County – The Union County Commission on the Status of Women is pleased to announce the 2012 recipients of the Women of Excellence Awards. The honorees will be celebrated at the 20th annual Women of Excellence dinner on Friday, March 23, 2012 at The Westwood, 438 North Avenue in Garwood.

“The Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders is proud to support the Commission in recognizing these women for their outstanding accomplishments,” said Freeholder Chairman Alexander Mirabella. “They have been an influential and integral part of our community and are positive examples of dedication and strong leadership.”

The Women of Excellence Awards, supported by the Union County Freeholder Board, are presented to recognize and honor distinguished women who reside or work in Union County. The candidates are nominated based on their achievements and the impact of their work on the County of Union in areas like Arts and Humanities, Business, Community Service, Education, Government, Law, Medicine/Health Care and Women’s Advocacy.

The 2012 honorees and their respective categories are:
