Register for Fall Family Fun at Trailside Nature and Science Center

people waling on a trailUnion County, NJ – The Union County Board of County Commissioners invites residents to enjoy the beautiful autumn season in the Watchung Reservation with a variety of outdoor programs offered by Trailside Nature and Science Center in Mountainside.

“Trailside’s programs offer families a wonderful opportunity to spend time together outdoors and reconnect with the natural world around us,” said Board of Commissioners Chairman Alexander Mirabella.

Pre-registration is required for all programs and can be completed online at ucnj.org/trailside (use the “Online Registration” link in the left-hand column).

Adults with children age four to six are invited to participate in Tyke Hikes, which are offered on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., beginning October 5. Participants will discover animal homes and hideouts, explore all the colors of the rainbow on a nature walk and search for monarch butterflies.

The fee is $10 per class for Union County residents and $12 per class for non-county residents. Other topics include snakes & turtles, backyard birds, senses, seeds and mammals.

Back to Nature, a series of walks in the Watchung Reservation for families, will resume on October 9, while moonlit family hikes will occur on October 21 and November 18. Programs are open to families with children ages four and older.

Back to Nature encourages nature discovery through hikes and outdoor activities. The series is offered on Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.  Families will learn to identify birds by color and sound, experience the life of the Lenape Native Americans and search for animal tracks on a fall hike.  Other topics include bats and animal tracks.

The fee per program is $5 for Union County residents and $6 for non-county residents.

A Hunter’s Moon Hike will take place on October 21 and a Frost Moon Hike will take place on November 18, from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.  Registrants will have the opportunity to explore the Watchung Reservation by the light of the full moon and learn about the wildlife that comes out after dark.

Social distancing will be practiced and face coverings are recommended.

Participants are advised to dress for the outdoors. Programs may be cancelled due to inclement weather.

Protejase Durante la Temporada del Flu/Gripe – Vacunese Gratis

Vacunas gratis a los residentes del Condado de Union comenzando el 23 de septiembre

 La Junta de Comisionados del Condado de Union anima a todos los residentes a que reciban su vacuna del flu/gripe lo antes posible este año. Las vacunas son gratis en las clínicas que administra la Oficina de Manejo de Salud en lugares a lo largo del Condado de Union, comenzando el jueves 23 de septiembre. Personas con seguros de salud se les pide que visiten su doctor o su farmacia para recibir la vacuna.

“Por favor protejase usted y su familia, y evite viajes inecesarios al doctor, o sala de emrgencia del hospital,” dijo el Presidente de la Junta de Comisionados Alexander Mirabella.

Protección en contra del flu/ripe es más importante ahora que nunca debido al brote del COVID-19. Los expertos en Salud Pública están preocupados que los recursos médicos  podrían ser abrumadores si el brote del flu/gripe se combina con la crisis del COVID-19.

Las clínicas gratis están abiertas a todos los adultos y niños de 9 años en Adelante en el Condado de Union.

Se les pide a los residentes que hagan sus citas visitando  ucnj.org/flu o llamando al  908-613-7829.

Las siguientes fechas han sido programadas. Cada evento se llevará a cabo de 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with a Family Movie Night in Plainfield on October 1st

Union County, NJ – The Union County Board of County Commissioners would like to invite all residents to a double feature drive up movie event on October 1st featuring Ferdinand and In the Heights in Plainfield High School’s parking lot, 950 Park Ave.

The parking lot will open at 5:30 p.m. and the event will begin at 6:00PM.

The event is free, but pre-registration is required at ucnj.org/reserve. Please keep in mind that only one registration is required per car.

“We are all excited for this double feature event in Plainfield,” said Commissioner Chairman Alexander Mirabella. “This event is a great way to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with the entire family.”

Ferdinand is a 2017 computer-animated comedy adventure film based on a bull named Ferdinand who refuses to participate in bullfighting but is forced back into the arena where his beliefs are challenged when he faces off against the world’s greatest bullfighter.

In the Heights is a 2021 musical drama film based on the well-known stage musical. This film tells the story of a corner in the predominantly Dominican Washington Heights neighborhood of Upper Manhattan in New York City, where every member of the community pursues their dreams of a better life.

The event will be shown on a weather-permitting basis. In case of bad weather, the rain date will be October 15th.

Food and drinks will not be available for purchase, but attendees may bring their own refreshments. Alcohol is strictly prohibited.

Please note that the audio for the movie will be transmitted thru Wi-Fi.

Attendees must stay in their vehicles (unless they need to use the restroom).

El Condado de Union Ofrece Distribuciones de Alimentos en el mes de Septiembre para Afectados por el COVID-19

Vacunas del COVID-19 y Pruebas de Saliva se ofrecen en los dos eventos de  Roselle y Plainfield

Condado de Union, NJ — La Junta de Comisionados del Condado de Union le informa a los residentes de la Distribución de alimentos en el mes de septiembre  para los afectados por el COVID-19.

Estos son los lugares:

Sábado, 25 de septiembre, 2021

  • 8:00 a.m. – Warinanco Park en Roselle
  • Peatones
  • Coordinados por el Condado de Union con el apoyo de Village Supermarkets, Gargiulo Produce y CMC Foods

Martes, 28 de septiembre, 2021

  • 11:00 a.m. – Gerald B. Green Plaza en Plainfield
  • Peatones
  • Coordinado por el Condado de Union con el apoyo de Village Supermarket y Gargiulo Produce

Estas distribuciones de alimentos son abiertas a todos  los residentes del Condado de Union. Los alimentos son distribuidos por orden de llegada, no se necesita inscripción previa. Los eventos se llevarán a cabo llueva o brille.

“Los residentes continúan en busca de asistencia durante la crisis de la pandemia del COVID-19  y nosotros estamos orgullosos de poder ser un recurso  y proporcionar la oportunidad a los residentes a que se vacunen,” dijo el Presidente de la Junta de Comisionados  Alexander Mirabella.

“Estamos progresando en la lucha contra el  COVID-19y sus variants, pero nuestros residentes continúan  enfrentando problemas de inseguridad alimenticia y desempleo,” dijo el Comisionado Sergio Granados quien sirve como Enlace a la Junta asesora de servicios Humanos. “Le damos las gracias al Village Super Market, Gargiulo Produce y CMC Foods por su ayuda en estos esfuerzos.”

Vacunas del COVID-19 están disponibles en ambos eventos  Johnson & Johnson (para aquellos de 18 años en adelante) y  Pfizer (de 12 años en adelante) . Se recomienda hacer citas, llamando al  (908) 613-7829 o en la página ucnj.2120check.com/home.  También se proporcionarán pruebas de saliva del COVID-19.

Máscaras son requeridas para los residentes que están recibiendo los alimentos en  Roselle y Plainfield. Los peatones deben trae un carrito para poder cargar sus bolsas y cajas de alimentos.

Al llegar, deben presentar prueba de residencia en New Jersey e indicar cuantas personas residen en su hogar. Los residentes recibirán una csja de vegetales frescos, productos  lácteos y enlatados suficiente para varios días. Solamente se les dará una caja de alimentos por cada familia.

Este evento se ejecutará en cumplimiento con las ordines del estado sobre el COVID-19 con respecto al distanciamiento social.

Aprenda a Como Entender y Actuar Sobre la Depresión, con My Perfect Life/ Mi Vida Perfecta

La Junta de Comisionados del Condado de Union , invita a los residentes a asisitir “Stories over Stigma,”/ Historias sobre el Estigma un seminario web gratis presentando a Lucas Wolfe, autor de My Perfect Life/ Mi Vida Perfecta, el miércoles 22 de septiembre de  6:00 p.m. a 7:00 p.m., en Zoom.

“Ahora más que nunca, es importante de estar informado y alerta de las señales y síntomas de depression, especialmente considerando el impacto que ha tenido en muchos las pandemia del COVID-19 y la devastación de Huracán  Ida en nuestra comunidad,” dijo el Presidente de la Junta de Comisionados Alexander Mirabella. “Participando en un debate abierto todos podemos ayudar a crear conciencia y crear un entorno de apoyo para quienes necesitan ayuda.”

En My Perfect Life, Mr. Wolfe describe como la depression suicida puede esconderse a plena vista mientras quienes la experimentan sufren en silencio,  a menudo con trágicas consecuencias. Su búsqueda de la paz, el próposito y la curación ofrece esperanza a quienes buscan orientación y apoyo.

El seminario web  Stories over Stigma es presentado a través de la Oficina  de Salud  de Conducta y Abuso de Sustancias, en el Departamento de Servicios Humanos.

Como parte de los sfuerzos del Condado de Union en concientización sobre los suicidios, la oficina está proporcionando copias de  My Perfect Life sin costo a cada escuela secundaria en los 21 municipios, junto al acceso a un plan de estudio  de salud mental para estudiantes de secundaria .

Para aquellos que andan en busca de ayuda, la Línea Nacional para la Prevención de Suicidio está disponible  24/7 en el 1-800-273-8255. Esta ofrece apoyo gratis y confidencial a todos las personas en peligro, así como  recursos de prevención de crisis para individuos y sus seres queridos, y mejores practices para profesionales.

Los Residentes del Condado de Union Pueden Aplicar para ser Trabajadores Electorales el Día de las Elecciones, Ganando $200

Los $200 aplican a las Elección General del Martes 2 de Noviembre

Condado de Union, NJ – Los residentes del Condado de Union están buscando una oportunidad de ayudar durante las Elecciones Gubernamentales del 2021, todavía tienen tiempor de aplicar para trabajar en las elecciones. Los trabajadores electorales deben asistir aun entranamiento mandatorio ya que libros electrónicos se van a usar por primera vez este año. 

Los trabajadores Electorales ganarán $200.00 por el día comenzando a las 5:15 a.m. hasta el cierre a las 8:00 p.m.

Estos trabajadores ejecutarán servicios esenciales el Día de las Elecciones asegurandose que cada votante pueda ejercer su derecho constitucional al voto.

Cualquier residente del Condado de Union que tiene 18 años o más y está inscrito como votante en el Condado de Union, puede aplicar para convertirse en trabajador Electoral.

No se necesita experiencia previa. Todos los trabajadores deben asistir a una sesión de entrenamiento.

Todas las personas que quieran convertirse en  entrabajadores electorales para las Elecciones Generales del 2 de noviembre deben aplicar para reservar su espacio.

Las Ubicaciones de las Elecciones Generales han sido Cambiadas Debido al Huracán Ida

La Administradora de la Junta Electoral  Nicole DiRado le avisa a los residentes del Condado de Union de los cambios en los lugares de votación para las elecciones generals del 2021. Debido al daño causado por el Huracán Ida.

“El Huracán Ida ha sido desvastador, y ha incluído muchos colegios electorales,” dijo la Sra. Ms. DiRado. “Le pedimos  a los votantes que visiten nuestra página para las próximas Elecciones Generales para que encuentren Los lugares donde votar. Los votantes también encontrarټ esta informaión cuando reciban  sus boletas de muestra.”

Los votantes que quieran votar en persona el Día de la Elecciones  2 de noviembre, deben usar sus lugares designados. Por favor visite la página ucnj.org/ucboe  para una lista actualizada de los lugares de votación.

Los lugares actualizados incluyen:

Free Series of Guided Nature Walks for Seniors Returns at Trailside Nature and Science Center

guided nature walkUnion County, NJ –The Union County Board of Commissioners welcomes back seniors age 55 and up to participate in a series of free guided walks at Trailside Nature and Science Center in Mountainside this fall.

Located at 452 New Providence Road in Mountainside, the series will take place every Friday from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., beginning October 8.

“These guided walks offer an excellent opportunity for senior residents to take part in an outdoor activity while enjoying the beautiful autumn season of the Watchung Reservation,” said Commissioner Chairman Alexander Mirabella.

Each walk is led by a Trailside naturalist and highlights a different topic, including Reptile Ramble, Migratory Birds, a Fall Nature Walk, Plant This, Not That, Ecosystem Invaders, a Deserted Village Tour, Lenape Native Americans and an Early Winter Walk.

Pre-registration is required through the Trailside website, ucnj.org/trailside (use the “Online Registration” link in the left-hand column).

Social distancing will be practiced and face coverings are recommended.

The Sensory Friendly Trail first opened in 2018 and has quickly become a popular destination. It winds gently through the woods with guide ropes and features multiple interpretive signs to learn about the local flora and fauna, with 3-D reliefs and Braille for the visually impaired. It also includes audio kiosks highlighting the natural and human history of the Watchung Reservation, the largest preserved park in Union County at 2,142 acres.

Update: Union County Residents Can Apply to be Poll Workers on Election Day, Earning $200 Stipend

Union County, NJ – Union County residents seeking an opportunity to help during the 2021 Gubernatorial election cycle still have time to apply to become poll workers this year. All poll workers must attend a paid, mandatory training session as Electronic Poll Books will be used for the first time ever.

Poll workers will earn $200 for the day, starting at 5:15 a.m. through the close of the polls at 8:00 p.m.

Poll workers perform essential services on Election Day, by ensuring every eligible voter is afforded an opportunity to exercise their constitutional right to vote.

Any Union County resident who is 18 years or older, and registered to vote in Union County, can apply to become a poll worker.

No experience is needed. All new poll workers must attend a single-session training course. Returning poll workers take a paid, training seminar on the use of the new electronic poll books.

Persons interested in becoming a poll worker for the General Election on November 2nd are advised to apply now to reserve a spot.

2021 General Election Locations Have Been Changed Due to Hurricane Ida

Union County, NJ – Union County Board of Elections Administrator Nicole DiRado advises all Union County residents of the new updates of the polling locations for the 2021 general election. Due to the damage caused by Hurricane Ida, a few polling locations have been changed.

“Hurricane Ida has devastated us all, including numerous polling locations” said Ms. DiRado. “We encourage voters to visit our website to ensure the location of your designated polling location for the upcoming General Election. Voters will also find this information on their sample ballots.”

Voters who choose to vote in person on Election Day, November 2, must use their designated polling place. Please visit ucnj.org/ucboe for the complete updated list of designated polling locations.

Updated polling locations include:

  • Elizabeth, Ward 4, Districts 6, 7, 9 & 10: O’Donnell Sampson Towers, 632 Salem Avenue
  • Springfield, Districts 1, 2, & 3: Caldwell School, 36 Caldwell Place, Gymnasium

The New Providence early voting location has been relocated to the New Providence Municipal Center, 360 Elkwood Avenue, Gymnasium (Academy Street Entrance), due to damage sustained during Hurricane Ida.

The Union Township early voting location has also been relocated to the Union Township Senior Center, 968 Bonnel Court.

Please keep in mind that early voting locations are for machine voting only. Vote by mail ballots cannot be submitted at these locations. Please visit https://ucnj.org/boe/early-voting/ for the complete list of early voting locations.

Voters who plan to use a vote by mail ballot can deposit it in any of the Board of Elections 24 secure drop boxes in Union County, return it to the Board of Elections by U.S. Postal Service, or hand-deliver it to the Board of Elections office in Elizabeth by November 2, 2021 at 8pm.
