Union County Continues Disaster Relief Pop-Up Sessions for Residents Affected by Hurricane Ida, Sept. 17 in Plainfield (updated)

Union County, NJ (updated with new location) — The Union County Board of County Commissioners informs residents that the next event in the County’s series of pop-up disaster relief sessions, in partnership with Red Cross and the Salvation Army, will be held in Plainfield on Friday, September 17, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Due to the expectation of inclement weather, the event will be held at the Crescent Avenue Presbyterian Church, located at 716 Watchung Avenue in Plainfield.

Attendance at all of the pop-up events is free and open to all Union County residents who need assistance, regardless of their town of residence.

“These events are aimed at ensuring that Union County residents can access all the resources for which they are eligible as quickly as possible, by meeting with our trained staff in person. The personal touch can make all the difference, and we will continue holding these sessions as long needed,” said Commissioner Board Chairman Alexander Mirabella.

Residents who need transportation within Union County to attend a pop-up event can schedule a ride with Union County Paratransit Services by calling 908-241-8300.

Services and information include assistance with property damage claims, missing documents, temporary housing, food assistance, stress counseling, and more.

COVID-19 vaccinations (Pfizer and Johnson & Johnson) will also be available on site, along with COVID-19 testing and basic health screenings.

Calling Volunteers to Help Clean Up Conant Park in Hillside, September 18

Cleanup project in Hillside is part of a project involving several parks along the Elizabeth River.

Union County, NJ – The Union County Board of County Commissioners in partnership with the company United by Blue and other community partners invites residents to join in a cleanup project at Conant Park in Hillside, taking place on Saturday, September 18 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Online pre-registration is strongly recommended at https://unitedbyblue.com/pages/join-a-cleanup. Walk-ins are also welcome to register at the site beginning at 10:00 a.m. (entrance to park is directly off of Conant Avenue).

The event features a visit from Union County’s Trailside Nature and Science Center and giveaways from the Bureau of Recycling.

“The Commissioner Board appreciates all of the residents who are coming together to help clean up the Elizabeth River in Hillside,” said Commissioner Chairman Alexander Mirabella. “As these clean-ups are family friendly and ability inclusive, feel free to bring the entire family.”

Keeping the parks along the Elizabeth River free of litter is important because windblown items from land can easily fall into the river and flow into Newark Bay, where it is harder to recover and a greater threat to wildlife.

All cleanup supplies will be provided by United by Blue, including gloves, bags, safety materials, and reusable cleanup supplies. The supplies are industrially cleaned between uses, but volunteers are welcome to bring their own supplies if they feel more comfortable

Volunteers are reminded to wear closed toed shoes and clothes that may get dirty. Long pants and bug spray are highly encouraged.

Volunteers are also encouraged to bring their own reusable water bottles. A water station will be available at the site to refill the bottles.

Although this event is fully outdoors, participants should bring a mask in case of close proximity situations.

Union County SNAP Recipients are Eligible for Hot Meals

Special disaster nutrition assistance is in effect until September 30.

Union County, NJ – The Union County Board of County Commissioners advises SNAP recipients in Union County that they are eligible for special disaster food assistance from now through September 30.

SNAP is the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. The special assistance was applied for and received by the New Jersey Department of Human Services after FEMA issued a Major Disaster Declaration for counties impacted by Tropical Storm Ida, including Union County as well as Bergen, Essex, Gloucester, Hudson, Hunterdon, Mercer, Middlesex, Passaic, and Somerset.

“Tropical Storm Ida has created new burdens on many households, including those impacted financially by the COVID-19 pandemic. I would like to thank the Murphy administration for their work in securing additional federal nutrition assistance for Union County and others affected by the storm,” said Union County Commissioner Chairman Alexander Mirabella. 

SNAP recipients in Union County can use their EBT benefits cards to purchase hot food at participating NJ SNAP retailers until Sept. 30, 2021.

For a list of participating retailers visit the interactive map at the U.S. Department of Agriculture website, usda.gov/snap/retailer-locator. Please note that the hot food waiver only applies to items purchased from SNAP-approved retailers located in the 10 counties under the Major Disaster Declaration issued by FEMA.

SNAP recipients in Union County also have until September 30 to request replacement benefits for food lost due to the impact of the storm.

All current Union County SNAP recipients can report food loss due to the impact of the storm by calling the Union County Social Services office at 908-965-2700.

Clients who are currently receiving SNAP benefits, can also report food loss by sending an email to elizredetbank@ucnj.org. In the email, please be sure to state your name, case number and address, and include  a brief statement  regarding your loss of food items only.

All Union County residents impacted by Tropical Storm Ida can visit ucnj.org/ida for additional resources and instructions on applying for assistance.

Union County has also scheduled mobile storm recovery assistance centers to provide guidance in person. The next event will be held Tuesday, September 14, from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in Rahway at the  Community Center, 3 City Hall Plaza.

An event will also be held on Friday, September 17, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in Plainfield at Black Lives Matter Plaza (City Hall), 515 Watchung Avenue.

Any Union County resident impacted by the storm can visit any of these events, regardless of their home town. Additional events will be added soon. For an updated list visit ucnj.org/ida.

Reminder: Free Shredding for Personal Documents, Sept. 18 and 24

Union County, NJ – Union County residents can bring their personal documents and sensitive papers to the next free paper shredding events sponsored by the Union County Board of County Commissioners. The next two events will take place, rain or shine, on Saturday, September 18 and Friday, September 24.

“The free shredding service makes it easy and convenient for Union County residents to dispose of sensitive documents while also supporting our countywide recycling efforts, and we strongly encourage everyone to participate,” said Commissioner Board Chairman Alexander Mirabella.

The September 18 event will be held at the Union County College campus on Springfield Avenue in Cranford. Use the 1033 Springfield Avenue entrance and follow signs to the rear of campus.

The September 24 event will be held at the Westfield Pool, located at 713 Cumberland Street in Westfield.

Each event is scheduled to begin at 9:00 a.m. and conclude at 1:00 p.m., but may finish earlier if the shredding trucks fill up to capacity.

Union County’s free paper shredding events are drive-up only. Paper for shredding should be placed in the trunk or cargo area, where it can be easily accessed. Staff at the site will unload the papers. Drivers must remain in their cars with their windows rolled up, and wear a face mask as a precaution against COVID-19.

All Union County residents can use the free paper-shredding events, regardless of their home town. In an effort to accommodate everyone, there is a limit of four 10-pound bags or boxes per vehicle. Preferably, documents should be brought in paper bags.

Participants are reminded that pre-shredded, damp, or wet paper will not be accepted. Bindings, large plastic or metal clips, and other paraphernalia should be removed.

Union County’s free shedding events are intended for personal, sensitive documents only. Residents can recycle magazines, junk mail and other waste paper with their municipal recycling program. For information, contact the local municipal recycling coordinator.

Union County to Hold First Annual Hispanic Heritage Flag Raising on September 15

Union County, NJ – The Board of County Commissioners reminds residents about the first annual Union County Hispanic Heritage Flag Raising Ceremony on Wednesday, September 15 at 5:30p.m, on the steps of the Union County Courthouse located at 2 Broad Street in Elizabeth. The event is free and all residents are invited to attend.

“Raising the Hispanic Heritage flag for the first time at the County Courthouse is our way of recognizing the contributions made by the Hispanic community living and working in Union County,” said County Commissioner Chairman Alexander Mirabella. “We are proud to be one of the most diverse counties in New Jersey and continue to work to promote unity.”

“Union County has over a half million residents and approximately one third of them claim Hispanic origin. Being of Salvadorian descent, I am proud to be one of almost 200,000 Hispanic residents that make Union County a better, more diverse place to live,” said Commissioner Sergio Granados. “The Hispanic community has for many years been a pillar of this country’s growth and development and their role right here in Union County continues to be just as impactful. We have been working towards this flag raising since my chairmanship in 2018, when Union County hosted the first ever Hispanic Heritage Month event. I am happy that after some postponing due to COVID-19, we are finally able to unify the various Hispanic ethnicities within our community under one flag as we come together for a month of celebration.”

“As a Cuban-American, I am proud to serve in a County with such a strong Hispanic presence,” said Commissioner Lourdes Leon. “We look forward to celebrating with everyone at this history-making event.”

The program for the event will include remarks from guest speaker Carlos Medina, Esq., President/CEO of the Statewide Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of New Jersey, as well as a performance by bongo player Francisco Garcia, the unveiling of the Union County Hispanic Heritage Month flag, free giveaways and more.

“As the recent census confirms Hispanic Americans are making an impact in NJ.  We are 21.6% of the population and own over 120,000 businesses that contribute 20 billion dollars annually to the NJ economy,” said Carlos Medina. “I am proud to speak at the Hispanic Heritage Flag raising to honor what this community means not only to the State’s economy but also to the rich diverse fabric of our state.”

The flag raising is the first in a series of scheduled events celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month. The full schedule of events includes:

Union County Announces Small Business Community Champions

Union County Commissioner Board recognizes the contributions of small businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Union County, NJ — The Union County Board of County Commissioners is pleased to announce that more than 100 businesses in all 21 municipalities have been nominated for recognition in the Union County Small Business Community Champion program. The program is designed to celebrate the role of small businesses in supporting and sustaining their communities during the COVID-19 pandemic. Each nominee is presented with a certificate and an entry on the Union County website, at ucnj.org/small-business-champions.

“On behalf of the Commissioner Board, I would like to thank all those who nominated a business for recognition in the Union County Small Business Community Champion program. Many of our local businesses have overcome extraordinary challenges during the pandemic to keep their doors open and keep serving our community, and they deserve our appreciation,” said Commissioner Board Chairman Alexander Mirabella.

To be eligible for recognition, nominees must have a small business located within Union County that is currently open for business and demonstrate how they have adapted or given back to the community.

FEMA Designates Union County as a Major Disaster Area in Wake of Hurricane Ida

Federal aid to supplement local recovery efforts in the areas affected by storm

Union County, NJ – The Union County Board of County Commissioners notifies all residents that President Joseph Biden and FEMA have designated Union County as a major disaster area following the destruction caused by Hurricane Ida from September 1 to 3, 2021.

Earlier this week, when an initial declaration for the State of New Jersey was approved and released by the federal government, Commissioner Chairman Alexander Mirabella, on behalf of the Union County Board of County Commissioners, called upon President Biden and FEMA to include Union County in the New Jersey Disaster Declaration.  Today’s announcement comes on the heels of FEMA and NJ Office of Emergency Management damage assessments throughout the course of the past week.

“The County of Union was hit hard by Hurricane Ida and the damage is extensive,” said Union County Commissioner Board Chairman Alexander Mirabella. “The updated declaration to include Union County will provide our residents with federal funding that is crucial to recovery and rebuilding.”

As part of the efforts to provide support, Union County has launched a series of pop-up Hurricane Relief events around the County, providing assistance and case work directly to affected residents. Scheduled events started today in Cranford and the next event is scheduled in Rahway on Tuesday, September 14 from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Rahway Community Center, located at 3 City Hall Plaza.

The County will also be coordinating with FEMA to establish a Disaster Recover Location within the Union County where residents can meet directly with FEMA representatives.

In addition to mobilizing emergency responses from various Federal Agencies, inclusion of Union County in the Major Disaster Declaration unlocks three main streams of federal funding to affected counties via FEMA:

  • Individual Assistance – Assistance to individuals and households;
  • Public Assistance – Assistance to state and local governments and certain private nonprofit organizations for emergency work and the repair or replacement of disaster damaged facilities;
  • Hazard Mitigation Assistance – Assistance to state and local governments and certain private nonprofit organizations for actions taken to prevent or reduce long term risk to life and property from natural hazards.

Available assistance can include grants for temporary housing and home repairs, low-cost loans to cover uninsured property losses, and other programs to help individuals and business owners recover from the effects of the disaster.

Union County homeowners and renters affected by Hurricane Ida could be eligible for help from FEMA. If residents have homeowners or renters insurance, they are advised to file a claim through their insurance company as soon as possible as FEMA cannot duplicate benefits covered by insurance. Those that are uninsured or underinsured may be eligible for federal assistance.

The fastest and easiest way to apply is by visiting disasterassistance.gov/ or by downloading the FEMA App on the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store. If it is not possible to apply online, call 800-621-3362 (TTY: 800-462-7585). The toll-free telephone lines operate from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., seven days a week.

Additional Pop-Up COVID-19 Vaccine Clinics and Testing in Union County in September

Union County, NJ – The Union County Board of County Commissioners informs residents that there will be additional free COVID-19 vaccines and testing available at convenient pop-up clinics throughout the County during the month of September. The upcoming clinics will be held in Westfield, Rahway, Scotch Plains, Roselle and Roselle Park.

Third doses of the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines for eligible residents will also be available at the upcoming mobile clinics. To check eligibility for a third dose, visit: https://ucnj.org/covid19/2021/08/14/union-county-will-offer-free-covid-19-third-shots-for-eligible-residents/.

In addition to free vaccinations, residents can also get a free COVID-19 saliva test at any of the pop-up clinics. Residents can also get vaccinated for COVID-19 at Union County’s permanent vaccine clinics. For an updated list of permanent sites, residents can visit: https://ucnj.org/covid19/vaccinations-page/. Vaccines are also available weekdays on a walk-in basis at the Union County Immunization Clinic located at 40 Parker Road in Elizabeth.

“Due to the new strains of the virus, all residents are strongly urged to get their vaccine as soon as possible,” said Union County Commissioner Board Chairman Alexander Mirabella. “Immunocompromised residents who are eligible for a third dose should also make an appointment as soon as possible for added protection.”

Union County began offering pop-up COVID-19 vaccination clinics in local communities earlier this year, in order to reach vulnerable populations including seniors, homeless individuals, and others who would have difficulty traveling to a centralized vaccine site.

“The Board of County Commissioners will continue to provide residents with opportunities for vaccination and testing,” said Commissioner and Chair of the Public Safety Committee Sergio Granados. “Easy access to vaccines and testing remains our focus as vaccination is key to keeping Union County residents safe as we continue to navigate COVID-19 and its variants.”

The County’s pop-up program has now expanded to include all age-approved Union County residents. Currently, any resident age 12 and older is eligible for the Pfizer vaccine. Eligibility for the Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccines begins at age 18. Those who receive the first dose of a two dose vaccine (Pfizer or Moderna) at one of Union County’s Mobile Vaccinations Clinics will receive instructions as to how and when to receive their second dose.

Any Union County resident can make an appointment at any of the following clinics, regardless of their home town:

Union County residents who are home-bound or have difficulty leaving the home can arrange for a home vaccination visit by contacting Union County’s service provider, Mobile Medical Services. Call 1-833-256-2478 during regular weekday business hours to speak with an operator, leave a voice message after hours to receive a callback, or email a callback request to vaccine@mmst.io. Messages are returned on the following business day.

Union County and Kean University Create Partnership to Bring Social Services to Students

County offers access to Department of Human Services to students on Union campus

Union County, N.J. — The County of Union and Kean University have launched an innovative partnership that gives the Union County Department of Human Services a regular presence at the University, offering students access to a multitude of free and comprehensive social services and resources that they may need in order to stay focused on their academic goals.

The Union County Department of Human Services Resource Table will operate from the first floor of the Center for Academic Success (CAS) on the Kean University campus, located at 1000 Morris Avenue in Union Township. Access and screening is free to all Kean University students and the partnership began August 30. The Department of Human Services will maintain a presence twice a week on campus throughout the 2021-2022 academic year.

“Union County is proud to offer students at Kean easy access to all that the Department of Human Services has to offer,” said Commissioner Board Chairman Alexander Mirabella. “The myriad of supportive services available ensure that students can have a successful university experience and succeed academically.”

“We know our students have what it takes to succeed in college, but sometimes they need support beyond academics to stay on track to graduation,” said Kean University President Lamont O. Repollet, Ed.D. “We are grateful for the County of Union’s support and services to help our students better manage their lives outside of the classroom so they can turn their focus to their studies, graduation and their professional goals.”

“As an alumnus of Kean University, I recognize how important it is for students to have easy access to services and resources available to them that facilitate the pursuit of a higher education,” said Commissioner Sergio Granados who also serves as Liaison to the Human Services Advisory Board. “This program will bring the Department of Human Services and all it has to offer directly to the students of Kean University, giving them an even greater foundation for academic success.”

The Department of Human Services will provide free referrals to services that can help address the needs of Kean students. Connections to critical resources needed to overcome financial barriers include:

  • Benefits Screening – Students can learn whether they qualify for federal and state benefits, like food and nutrition programs (SNAP, WIC), health insurance (CHIP, Medicaid), cash, and utilities and transportation assistance. DHS staff can also help with applying for these benefits.
  • Tax Preparation – Free consultation with a certified tax preparer and tax filing are available to students to help them maximize tax credits and refunds.
  • Health Care Enrollment – Support for students to explore healthcare insurance options and find help with enrolling and/or renewing coverage.
  • Financial Education – Services to support students in establishing and achieving financial goals with guidance in budgeting, banking, credit counseling and debt management.
  • Legal Counseling – On-site experts can provide guidance with public benefits, housing, utilities, employment and immigration issues.
  • Referral Services – DHS staff will connect students with additional on-campus and external services and resources.

Students can meet with DHS staff while they are on campus and if necessary, they can also schedule an on-campus appointment during times when DHS isn’t scheduled to be on site. Students wishing to meet with a DHS staff member to discuss social services and eligibility can request an appointment by calling the DHS Action Line at (888) 845-3434.

New Hire-on-the-Spot Job Fair for Union County Residents, Sept. 22

Union County, NJ – Job seekers and employers can find the perfect match at the next hire-on-the-spot job fair sponsored by the Union County Board of County Commissioners on Wednesday, September 22, at the Warinanco Sports Center in Union County’s Warinanco Park, located at 1 Park Drive in Roselle. The job fair will be open from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., and 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

FedEx, UPS, NJTransit, Amazon, Farmland, and Wakefern are among the many firms seeking to hire qualified employees at the September 22 job fair.

“The new job fair is part of our efforts to ensure that qualified Union County job seekers can connect with the right employers more quickly and effectively. We encourage everyone to come and participate,” said Union County Commissioner Chairman Alexander Mirabella.

“Our residents and our business community both need to rebuild after the COVID-19 crisis, and the aftermath of Tropical Storm Ida has added to the challenges. I want to thank the participating businesses for reaching out to connect with job seekers and help speed Union County on the road to recovery,” said Commissioner Sergio Granados, who is the Commissioner Board Liaison to the Union County Workforce Development Board.

Job seekers who plan to attend the September 22 event must use the online form at https://ucnj.org/dhs/2021-job-fair/ to pre-register. Attendees are advised to bring their resumes and wear attire appropriate for interviews.

Vendors who would like to participate can also pre-register at https://ucnj.org/dhs/2021-job-fair/.  Tables, chairs, table cloths, and water will be provided, and there will be a private area for interviewing purposes. An indoor concession stand will be open for the purchase of food.

With high ceilings, contemporary styling and a view of Warinanco Park, Union County’s Warinanco Sports Center provides a welcoming, modern space for job fairs and other public events.

In accordance with current COVID-19 prevention guidelines, masks are optional for fully vaccinated Job Fair attendees. Those who are unvaccinated must wear masks and observe social distance.
